Change4Life Couch to 5K: Week 1

Thursday, September 04, 2014

Yes, that's right, you read that I am going to be doing the Couch to 5K program. In fact, I have just completed my first week - go me!

Those who know me will be thinking to themselves that this is completely unlike 'me'; I am not a fitness junkie nor have I ever been. I did have a spat last year where I started going to the gym, but after an on-going back problem, I stopped and never found the motivation to go back. But alas! The motivation is back on board and I'm excited for the coming weeks!

Before I go on any further, I'd like to say that I am not running to lose weight or anything like that. I am doing it to become healthier, fitter and to simply better myself, because at the end of the day, if you don't love who you are and what you do, then you can never be fully content in life - in my opinion anyway!

The motivation to get fighting fit started after my mom's other half, Nick, and some of his buddies completed the 5K (which turned in to a 9K after some course changes) Suffering Race. They did brilliantly and we all had a great day but seeing them finish the race and be so proud of themselves made me realise that I wanted to accomplish something like that.

After deciding to make a change, off I popped to the local fitness shop and picked myself up some decent running trainers, some skinny capris and a sports bra (gotta keep the pups feeling comfortable, haven't we ladies!). I then downloaded the Change4Life 'Couch to 5K' app and sorted out a music playlist to run to (a must have for all runners!) and I was ready to go.

I am pleased to say that I made it through week one alive! Yipee!! The first week was three 30min programs which consisted of a brisk 5min warm up walk, followed by 1min run, then 90secs walking and so on for 20mins until you do another brisk 5min walk to cool down. In total, you run for 8mins! For a first time runner like moi, doing it all was a big achievement.

I'll keep you updated as I go along but the app is a 9-week course so let's see how I do! To find out more about the program and app, click here.

Do you run or do any fitness? Have you given the Change4Life app a go?

  1. This sounds like such an amazing way to keep fit! I've never been into fitness, but since moving to Uni & having all my flatmates being fitness fanatics it's really kicked me up the bum! I've eaten so much healthier to gain a healthier lifestyle but excersize is just something I pretty much avoid! I'm so bad at it it's crazy haha, I give up after 10 minutes! This seems like such a simple way to push yourself! Can't wait to see all your updates x

    1. Don't worry, I am exactly the same, never found the motivation to go longer than 5-10mins before! But the app is really good as it's a great introduction to running and the voice over is very motivational as you're going along. It makes it real easy for first time runners, perhaps give it a go? I'd definitely suggest it :) And at least you're eating healthier so always a start to a healthier lifestyle :)

  2. Good luck! I have heard about it and been tempted but I just hate running so much! I might have a look at the app for a swimming alternative

    1. Thank you Fiona! I used to hate running too, but the app makes it really easy and I've found a lovely running spot so feels good to do it now :) There's bound to be something for swimming, good luck in finding it! :)

  3. Great job Amy. I don run (it's not recommended for me) but I do go to gym 5 times a week for workout and Zumba-class. Good luck girl. xoxo

    1. Thanks Nina :) What's Zumba like? I've always wanted to try it!! Thank you again hun :) xx

  4. Stick at it, honey!

I was four weeks into this, like you just trying to be healthier and fitter. Then someone stopped me while I was running to ask me if I was serious about "losing weight". I haven't had the confidence to go since.

You've encouraged me get back to it as it is really rewarding! :) xx

    1. Thank you Sarah, I'm definitely sticking to it!
I am so sorry to hear about that; what an awful thing to say someone, especially when it's clear you were out there being fit and healthy by running!! I am SO pleased to hear that this post has helped you get back out there, it's made my day! Never let what other people say affect you, you're doing it for you and you should be incredibly proud of that! Good luck and thanks again for the lovely comment :) A xx
